About

"Sakuntala's Ring" is a project by the Bayerisches Staatsballett. It is based on the Indian verse drama "Sakuntala" by the poet Kalidasa and is one of the most important sources of material for the ballet classic "La Bayadère". Seven illustrators were commissioned to each visually interpret one act of Kalidasa's "Sakuntala" in their own style. The sound design was created by Renu Hossain (RENU). She worked with an original recording of "La Bayadère", which was recorded especially for "Sakuntala's Ring" with the Bavarian State Orchestra conducted by Michael Schmidtsdorff at the Nationaltheater Munich in May 2023.

The Japanese stage and costume designer Tomio Mohri opted for an unconventional design for the Munich production of "La Bayadère" in 1998. He combined Japanese prints, fairytale elements and motifs from classical ballet to create a fantasy world. His interest in graphics in Japanese art was the catalyst for realizing "Sakuntala's Ring" in illustrated form.
